in the 12 th principle maimonides states,
"And part of this principle that there is no king of Israel except from the house of David and from the seed of Solomon alone. And anyone who disputes this regarding this family is a denier of the name of God and in all the words of the prophets. " Why is the lineage of the Messiah part of the principle?

Perhaps because, according to the prophets, G-d gave his word to David that the kingdom would never cease from him...?
Someone who believes otherwise is in a way doubting the promise of G-d Himself. Think about it. |

According to this answer it is a denial of the earlier principles (prophecy, God's unchangegabilty etc.) not a denial of the Messiah, if so why does the Rambam put it here. also there are many things which God has promised why is this one mentioned explicitly

It was a personal promise to David. In a sense, it gets personal whenyou doubt G-d's personal promises

According to R' Yosef Kapach's notes to his translation of the RaMBaM's commentary on the mishna ad loc., the lineage emphasis was against the Christians, who drew their mesiah's lineage through Natan( Luke 3, 31). Tamir. Last edited by TbSE : 12-04-2008 at 05:56 AM. |
